Survivor Pool Strategy: How to Survive One Loss and Out

Save the elite teams for late, dodge divisional road traps, and check quarterback health before locking a pick.

Published September 10, 2026

In a survivor pool, also called a knockout or suicide pool, you pick one team to win each week and you cannot use the same team twice. One loss and you are eliminated. With a full NFL season, the challenge is that by December you have used most of the league and are forced into uncomfortable picks.

The classic strategy is to save the strongest teams for late in the season. Early weeks have plenty of lopsided matchups, so pick a solid favorite at home against a weak opponent and save the elite teams for when the schedule gets thin. Never use a top team on a game you could win with a lesser one.

Avoid division games and road picks where possible, since upsets cluster there. Check quarterback health before locking: a backup quarterback can turn a heavy favorite into a trap. Watch for teams resting starters late in the season if they have clinched playoff seeding. The pool thins fast, so the goal is survival, not style. Join a pool at /survivor.
